The Podcast Equipment Guide: What to Buy at Every Budget
Gear matters less than the room, and the room matters less than consistency. Still, the right kit removes friction. Here is what to buy, in order.
Starter — around $150
One USB dynamic microphone, a desk stand or short boom arm, closed-back headphones, and a pop filter. Dynamic mics reject room noise, which is exactly what an untreated space needs.
Serious — around $500
An XLR dynamic mic plus a two-channel interface, a proper boom arm, and basic acoustic panels behind and beside you. This is the point where a second person can join you in the room without the audio falling apart.
Studio — around $1,500
Two matched XLR mics, a mixer with per-channel gain, on-ear monitoring for both hosts, and a camera if you are going video-first. Add a wireless lavalier set for on-location recording.
Upgrades that rarely pay off
Boutique preamps, expensive cables, and plugin bundles will not fix a reflective room or a rushed take. Spend on treatment, a second mic for guests, and editing time instead.
