Monetization guide

How to monetize a podcast with sponsors

A step-by-step guide to landing podcast sponsors: rate cards, CPM math, outreach templates, host-read ad scripts, and how to report results sponsors renew on.

01

Know what you can honestly sell

Sponsors buy attention, not vanity numbers. Before you pitch, pull your average downloads per episode in the first 30 days, your top three listener countries, and any first-party audience data you have (email list size, community size, survey answers). A show with 400 engaged downloads in a tight niche routinely out-earns a general-interest show with 4,000 casual ones.

02

Price with CPM, then sanity-check it

The industry baseline is CPM — cost per 1,000 downloads. Common ranges are roughly $15–$25 CPM for a 30-second pre-roll, $18–$30 for a 60-second mid-roll, and higher for a fully integrated host-read segment. Multiply your 30-day average downloads by (CPM ÷ 1000). At 1,200 downloads and a $25 mid-roll CPM, one ad slot is about $30 — which is why small shows sell flat-rate packages and performance deals instead of raw CPM.

03

Build a one-page sponsor kit

One page, no fluff: what the show is, who listens (age, role, spending intent), download and engagement numbers with the date range, ad formats and prices, past sponsor results if any, and how to book. Export it as a PDF and host it at a link you can paste into any email.

04

Pitch brands your listeners already buy

The fastest yes comes from a brand your audience mentions unprompted. List 25 of them. Find the partnerships, influencer, or brand marketing contact — not the general inbox. Reference a specific episode, a specific product, and a specific reason your listeners convert for them.

05

Write host-read ads that sound like the show

Host-read ads outperform produced spots because they carry your credibility. Use a real story, one clear benefit, one objection handled, and one offer code. Keep it 45–75 seconds and record it in the same session as the episode so the energy matches.

06

Report results so the deal renews

Send a short recap within a week of the flight: downloads delivered, promo code redemptions or tracked link clicks, listener replies, and one suggestion for the next flight. Renewals are where podcast sponsorship income becomes predictable — a renewed sponsor costs you zero outreach.

Replace everything in braces. Keep it under 150 words — partnership managers skim.

Subject: {Show name} x {Brand} — {audience} listeners who already buy {category}

Hi {First name},

I host {Show name}, a {niche} podcast with about {downloads} downloads per episode in the first 30 days. My listeners are {short audience description}, and {Brand} comes up on the show without me being paid to say it — most recently in episode {number}, "{episode title}".

I have {number} host-read mid-roll slots open in {month}. A 4-episode package runs {price}, includes a promo code, and I send a results recap after the flight.

Read it out loud before recording. If it does not sound like something you would say unpaid, rewrite it.

You know how {problem the audience actually has}? I ran into that exact thing while {specific personal moment}.

That's why I use {Brand}. {One sentence on what it does.} What sold me was {the single most concrete benefit — a number, a time saved, a result}.

Go to {url} and use code {CODE} for {offer}. That's {url}, code {CODE}. It tells them the show sent you, which keeps episodes like this one coming.

Frequently asked questions

How many downloads do you need to get podcast sponsors?

There is no hard floor. Networks and ad marketplaces typically want 1,000+ downloads per episode, but direct sponsors regularly buy shows under 500 downloads when the niche is tight and the host can point to real listener actions. Sell the audience, not the number.

What is a normal podcast sponsorship rate?

Most direct deals land between $15 and $30 CPM depending on ad length and placement, with integrated host-read segments priced higher. Small shows usually quote a flat rate per episode or per package instead of a pure CPM.

Should you join a podcast ad network?

Networks handle sales for you but take a cut and often require minimum download thresholds. Direct sponsorships pay more per slot and give you the relationship, which is what produces renewals. Many hosts do both once they cross a few thousand downloads.

How do you track whether a sponsorship worked?

Use a unique promo code and a unique vanity URL per sponsor, and compare download numbers over the flight window. Send both to the sponsor with your recap so the next deal is a conversation about scaling, not proving value.

Are sponsorships the best way to monetize a podcast?

They are the most common first revenue stream, but rarely the largest. Memberships, your own products or services, affiliates, platform revenue, and live events typically out-earn ads over time. Stack them rather than relying on one sponsor.
